WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia volleyball team suffered its second consecutive loss as Wake Forest posted a 3-0 (30-18, 30-27, 30-23) victory Saturday (Oct. 7) at Reynolds Gymnasium. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Demon Deacons improve to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the ACC.

Second-year middle Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) led Virginia with nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while third-year middle Katie Oakes (Lorton, Va.) had eight kills and a team-high four blocks. First-year outside hitter Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) added seven kills, four digs and three service aces.

Fourth-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla.) compiled 25 assists, six digs, three kills, two service aces and two blocks. Third-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas) led the Cavaliers’ defensively with nine digs.

Jessica Furlong led Wake Forest with 13 kills and three blocks, while Jackie Lucas and Natalie Mullikin both had seven kills and four blocks. Dylan Faulkner registered a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. Natasha Schaefer led all players with 13 digs.

UVa hit only .016 in the match with 33 kills and 31 hitting errors, while the Demon Deacons hit .250 with 40 kills. Wake Forest held a 13-5 advantage in team blocks and a 51-33 edge in digs. Virginia held a 6-4 advantage in service aces.

In the first game, Wake Forest tallied 17 kills to UVa’s eight in a 30-18 win. The Demon Deacons hit .560 in the opening frame, while Virginia hit .000. Wake Forest took the second game 30-27 for a 2-0 lead. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Wake came back to win. UVa recorded 15 kills in the second game, but also had 15 attack errors, six of which were Demon Deacon blocks. In game three, Wake held a 15-10 edge in kills as well as a 28-15 advantage in digs while recording a 30-23 win to close out the match.

With the completion of its four-match road trip, Virginia returns home to Memorial Gym on Friday (Oct. 13) when it hosts Miami at 7:00 p.m.
