Box Score

The Virginia field hockey team fell 5-2 to top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland in ACC semifinal action on Chapel Hill this afternoon (Nov. 3). Virginia (13-7) scored in the 45th minute off a steal by Fenna Breitbarth to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Terps (19-1) tacked on three more goals before Virginia scored as time expired on a short corner. The Cavalier defense held the Terrapins to four short corners, half of their average of eight per game.

Maryland drew the first corner but the Cavaliers were able to defend it, keeping the game scoreless. The Terps were on the board first as Emily Trycinski knocked in a pass by Bri Davies in the 25th minute on a scramble in front of the cage for a 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers drew a pair of short corners at the end of the first half but Virginia was unable to convert and the Terrapins took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Maryland took a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute as Paula Infante scored on a direct corner shot off assists from Janneke van Leeuwen and Kristina Edmonds.

Virginia answered three minutes later as Fenna Breitbarth stole the ball at the top of the D, took it in and chipped a shot past Kathryn Masson for a goal in the 45th minute. The Terps then scored three goals in a five minute span as Infante scored followed by a pair of goals from Susie Rowe to open up a 5-1 lead.

With time winding down, Katherine Bounds sent the ball into the circle where Mia Link received it but was fouled, giving the Cavaliers a short corner. On the restart, Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn sent the ball ahead to Link, who chipped it into the cage for a goal in the 70th minute.

The Cavaliers now await their seeding in the NCAA Tournament. The teams and seedings will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 7 in the evening.
