Cavalier Swimming and Diving Teams Remain Undefeated in the ACC

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both remained unbeaten in the ACC this season by recording wins over Georgia Tech Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavalier men (4-0, 3-0 ACC) defeated the Yellow Jackets (0-4, 0-2) 136-95. The Cavalier women (3-1, 3-0 ACC) downed the Yellow Jackets (1-4, 1-2) 125-109.
In the men’s meet, the Cavaliers won eight of the first 10 events of the meet before exhibitioning the final three events. Darren Ankosko (East Brunswick, N.J.) won the 1000 Free in 9:18.94. John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) won the 200 Free in a time of 1:39.37. In the 50 Free, Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won in a time of 21.22. Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the 400 I.M. in 3:57.27. In the 200 Butterly, Dan McMahon (Atlanta, Ga.) won in 1:51.69. Bjorn Falk (Wilton, N.H.) took the win in the 200 Backstroke in 1:51.92. The 500 Free was won by Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.), with a time of 4:33.63. The team of Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas), Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia), Hirniak, and Imboden won the 400 Medley Relay in 3:21.41. Rogulj won the 200 Breaststroke in an exhibition time of 2:01.85. Also recording an exhibition time win was the Cavalier 400 Free Relay team of Richard Hutton (Leicestershire, England), Imboden, Millen, and Zach Hayden (Manassas, Va.), in a time of 3:04.19.
In the women’s meet, the Cavaliers won seven of the first 11 events before exhibitioning the final two. Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa.) won two events, winning the 50 Free in 23.89 and the 100 Free in 51.45. Jenn Narum (Pleasanton, Calif.) won the 1000 Free in 10:01.39. Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C.) swam the 200 Free in 1:51.39 to win. The 400 I.M. was won by Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga.) in 4:21.39. Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C.) won the 200 Backstroke in a time of 2:05.30. In the 400 Medley Relay, the team of Mei Christensen (Reston, Va.), Katherine McDonnell (Culpeper, Va.), Glover, and Bland won in a time of 3:50.41. MCDonnell won the 200 Breaststroke in an exhibition time of 2:20.51. Virginia’s 400 Free Relay team of Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va.), Colleen Law (Bethesda, Md.), Caroline Dayton (Davidson, N.C.) and Jenna Harris (St. Louis, Mo.), also recorded an exhibition time win in a time of 3:34.16.
The men’s team will return to action on November 17 when it travels to Tennessee. The women will return to action December 1-3 at the Princeton Invitational.
