Cavaliers Fall at ACC/Big Ten Challenge

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – – Damian Johnson won all three of his matches while Rocco Caponi and Eric Albright each went 2-1 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Carmichael Gym Saturday. Virginia dropped all three dual meets to Northwestern, 24-12, Wisconsin, 30-7 and Purdue, 19-16.
Johnson, wrestling at 165 pounds, registered a 14-2 major decision over Wisconsin’s Jake Donar for the Cavaliers in the meet with the Badgers. Johnson defeated Northwestern’s Jim Friend, 5-2 and Purdue’s Aaron Goebel, 4-1.
Albright at 133 pounds won over Northwestern’s Eric Metzler, 9-6. He defeated Purdue’s Sean Schmaltz, 7-2, but fell to Wisconsin’s Zach Tanelli, 7-6.
Caponi defeated Wisconsin’s Trevor Brandvold at 184 pounds, 3-2. He had a 14-0 major decision over Purdue’s Nick Skinner, but fell to Northwestern’s Jake Herbert, 20-5.
Drew DiPasqaule and Scott Smith each had wins against Northwestern. Mike Sewell and Kellon Balum each picked up wins against Purdue.
Virginia returns to action Dec. 1-2 when they travel to take part in the Las Vegas Invite.
