CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head softball coach Karen Johns has announced the signing Lauren McCaskey (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) to a national letter of intent with UVa during the early signing period. McCaskey, who played outfield, first and third base in high school and travel ball, will enroll at Virginia for the 2007-08 academic year.

McCaskey, 5-8, is from Santa Barbara, Calif., and attends Dos Pueblos High School. She has started throughout her first three seasons as a member of the Dos Pueblos softball team. McCaskey is a three-time first-team All-Santa Barbara County and first-team All-Channel League selection. She was named the 2006 All-Channel League MVP and has helped Dos Pueblos to three league titles as well as the 2005 CIF Southern Section Division 4 Championship. Dos Pueblos advanced to the semifinals of the 2006 CIF Southern Section Division 4 tournament as well. Academically, McCaskey has earned a Scholar Athlete Award three consecutive seasons.

McCaskey is her third season as a member of the 18U Gold Orange County Batbusters-Haning and helped the team win the 2006 18U Gold National Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla. Her team also took third place in the 2005 ASA 18U Gold Nationals in Salinas, Calif., and were runners-up in the 2005 Boulder Independence Day Tournament.

“Lauren is coming to the University of Virginia with national championship experience,” said Johns. She is looking forward to the challenge of helping UVA softball reach those same heights.”

Johns has already announced the signing of catcher/utility player Jennifer Lapicki (Oldwick, N.J./Immaculata).
