CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head softball coach Karen Johns has announced the signing Courtney Pettit (Deer Park, Texas/Deer Park) to a national letter of intent with UVa during the early signing period. Pettit, an outfielder/first baseman, will enroll at Virginia for the 2007-08 academic year.

Pettit, 5-8, is from Deer Park, Texas, and attends Deer Park High School. She has earned two varsity softball letters while starting the past two seasons at first base. In 2006, Pettit served as a team captain. She earned second-team All-District 23-5A honors in 2006. Pettit also helped lead Deer Park to the 2006 district championship.

Pettit is a two-year member of Deer Park’s National Honor Society and a member of the Spanish Honor Society as a senior. She has been a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes since her sophomore season and serves as the representative for softball. Pettit is also the softball representative to the President’s Club.

She serves as treasurer of Interact, which helps to rebuild things in the community. Pettit is a Peer Assistant to an elementary school student and also teaches hitting lessons once a week to a seven-year old.

Pettit plays travel ball for the Texas Storm 18U Gold.

“Courtney will add a great deal to our offense,” said Johns. “She has a great swing and can play any of the outfield spots.”

Johns has already announced the signing of catcher/utility player Jennifer Lapicki (Oldwick, N.J./Immaculata) and utility player Lauren McCaskey (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos).
