CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Sean Singletary had 33 points and J.R. Reynolds had 26 Thursday night as Virginia welcomed former player and coach Jeff Jones to its new John Paul Jones Arena by drubbing Jones and American University, 91-70.

Singletary scored 13 of Virginia’s first 15 points, the last four to spark a 27-4 run that made it 37-13.

Virginia (8-3) led 42-19 at halftime and the Eagles never got closer than 13.

American (7-5) went 0-for-14 from the field and had four turnovers during the big drought in the opening half. After Brayden Billbe’s dunk with 14:29 left, they didn’t get another field goal until Garrison Carr’s 10-footer 3:47 before halftime.

The Eagles made a run to start the second half, outscoring Virginia 15-5 in the first 4 1/2 minutes to get within 47-34, but Reynolds scored the game’s next eight points – two after Jones drew a technical foul – and the Cavaliers improved to 7-0 at home.

Singletary, a junior, needed 24 points to become the 41st Cavaliers player in history to reach 1,000 career points, and he passed the milestone in the second half.

He was 9-for-16 from the field and hit 5 of 9 from 3-point range, while Reynolds was 9-for-15. Singletary made 10 of 10 free throws, and Reynolds made 8 of 8.

Andre Ingram, who leads the Eagles with a 14.2-point average, led the visitors with 14, but was just 3-for-16 from the field. Paulius Joneliunas added 10 points.
