Four Cavaliers Claim Titles at Virginia Intercollegiates

NORFOLK, Va. – – Eric Albright, Mike Grogan, Rocco Caponi and Scott Smith each claimed titles as Virginia finished second with 179 points at the Virginia Intercollegiates held Saturday at Granby High School. Virginia was the only team with four individual champions.
Old Dominion won the team title with 196 points followed by Virginia, Liberty, George Mason, VMI, James Madison and The Apprentice School.
The Cavaliers had two wrestlers finish as runner-ups, three third place finishes, two fourth place finishes and three fifth place finishes.
The senior heavyweight, Smith claimed his first individual title of the season. Smith, who entered the tournament unseeded knocked off two of the top three seeds to go 4-0 on the day. He defeated Old Dominion’s Matt Pellar in the finals. Albright won the title at 133 pounds winning by technical fall in the finals. Caponi won 184 pounds after he knocked Old Dominion’s Jesse Strawn, 7-2, in the finals. Strawn finished ahead of Caponi at the Souther Scuffle. Grogan avenged an earlier season to George Mason’s Randy Oates. He won in the 174-pound finals, 6-4.
The Cavaliers had six wrestlers advance to the finals. Ross Gitomer at 125 pounds and Mike Sewell at 157 pounds each finished second. Sewell defeated the No. 1 seed at 157 pounds, Chris Brown to advance to the semifinals. Gitomer decisioned Old Dominion’s Kyle Huter to advance to the finals.
Kellon Balum at 141 pounds, Pete Ferrara at 149 pounds, and Kyle Narkiewicz at 197 pounds each placed third. Pat Riley at 149 pounds and Joe DeGaravilla at 149 pounds each finished fourth while Beau Fisher, Jack Danilkowicz and Calvin Cardillo each finished fifth.
Virginia will next be in action when the Cavaliers compete at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., next weekend.
