Meggie Schuelke Wins Second Consecutive High Jump Competition

Virginia student-athlete Meggie Schuelke won her second consecutive high jump competition with a leap of 5′ 8.75″ at the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md. today (Jan. 20). It is the second consecutive title for Schuelke, who also won her opener last weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Teammate Yemi Ayeni won the shot put competition, leading a 1-3-6 for Virginia. Jeff McClurg hit a personal best 15′ 3″ in the pole vault to edge teammate David Lewis for runner-up honors; Lewis also vaulted 15′ 3″ to take third overall.
Kathryn Pettine helped the women keep pace with the men in the pole vault as she vaulted 11′ 5.75″ to also earn runner-up honors while teammate Katie Darraugh took fourth overall with her 10′ 10″. Bianca Debartolo was the runner-up in the long jump with her 18′ 1″.
Ayeni’s toss of 51′ 9.25″ was exactly two feet past teammate Eric Pickle, who threw 49′ 9.25″ to take third while Rob Rankin tossed a 47′ 11.25″ for sixth. A pair of Cavaliers took fifth in the mile as Jen Dolson ran a 5:14.59 while Andy Biladeau ran 4:14.40. Virginia also took sixth and seventh in the men’s 3K as Matt Gambale ran a 8:45.65 and Trey Miller finished just behind him in a 8:47.56.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend as they compete in the George Mason Invitational on Jan. 27 in Fairfax, Va.
