Cavalier Swimming and Diving Teams Sweep Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Virginia swimming and diving teams recorded a pair of non-conference road victories Sunday afternoon at the Trees Pool in Pittsburgh. The Cavalier men topped Pittsburgh 166-132, while the Cavalier women defeated the Panthers 184-116. With the wins, the men’s team improves to 7-2 on the year, and the women’s team improves to 5-3.
The Cavalier men won 8 of the 16 events. John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) was a three-event winner for Virginia, taking first place in a time of 9:25.37 in the 1000 free, a time of 1:40.04 in the 200 free, and a time of 4:34.20 in the 500 free. Bryan Stahl (Woodland, Texas) won the 100 backstroke in a time of 52.06. Pat Mellors returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh and won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:51.48. Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.) took first in the 100 butterfly, with a time of 50.17.
The Cavaliers also won both relays of the day, as the team of Stahl, Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia), Lee Robertson (Waynesboro, Va.), and Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:31.57. The team of John Azar (El Paso, Texas), Imboden, Rich Hutton (Leicestershire, U.K.) and Hirniak won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:05.33.
The women’s team won 12 of the 16 events. Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa.) was a two-event winner, taking first in the 50 free (23.74), and 100 free (50.97). Mei Christensen (Reston, Va.) was also a two-event winner, taking the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:59.77, and the 200 I.M. in a time of 2:06.63. Jenn Narum (Pleasanton, Calif.) took first in the 1000 free with a time of 10:10.35. Katherine McDonnell (Culpeper, Va.) won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.21. Megan Evo (Beverly Hills, Mich.) was the winner of the 200 butterfly event, with a time of 2:04.89. Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J.) won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2;19.76. Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C.) took first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.17. Jackie Apple (New Albany, Ohio) scored 245.25 in the 3-meter diving to win that event.
The women also won both relays of the day, as the team of Christensen, McDonnell, Glover, and Lewis won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:44.94. Glover, Lewis, Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va.), and Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C.) won the 400 free relay in 3:27.95.
The Cavalier women return to action on Wednesday as they host Richmond at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Both teams will host Maryland on Saturday in the final regular season meet of the season for Virginia.
