The Virginia women’s lacrosse team, the 2006 ACC Champions, has been ranked in the top-10 in three preseason polls. The Cavaliers were slotted in the No. 2 spot by Lacrosse Magazine, the official publication of US Lacrosse, No. 7 in the insidelacrosse media poll, and No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association poll, which was released on Monday (Feb. 5).

The Cavaliers are coming off a 15-4 campaign in 2006 that saw the team win the ACC Championship, their second in three years, and advance to the NCAA Championships for the 11th consecutive year. Second-year Blair Weymouth was named the National Rookie of the Year and was selected to the US National Developmental Women’s Lacrosse team in August. She returns, along with three teammates who were also named to the US squad: Jessy Morgan, Megan O’Malley, and Jen Holden.

The Hoos will travel to Durham, N.C. to compete in the South of the Border Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 11. South of the Border is a playday for lacrosse teams; Virginia will scrimmage UNC, Duke and Davidson as part of the tournament. The Cavaliers return home to host ACC-rival Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7:00 pm. The winner of the game is earn one point for their school in the Commonwealth Challenge, presented by Comcast, the annual all-sports competition between the Cavaliers and the Hokies.
