Virginia Women's Tennis Falls at Tennessee 4-3

Knoxville, TN – Playing its sixth straight road match, the 27th-ranked Virginia women’s tennis team came up just short in a 4-3 loss at 30th-ranked Tennessee Sunday afternoon. The defeat drops UVa to 4-2 while the Lady Vols improve to 3-1.
Tennessee managed to jump out to the early lead by capturing two of three doubles matches to win the contest’s first point.
The Lady Vols duo of Ghizela Schutte and Connor Vogel rallied to take a hard-fought 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles against Virginia’s Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Kristen McVitty (Woodland Hills, Calif.). Virginia’s Lara Alexander (London, England) and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) fell to Samantha Orlin and Caitlin Whoriskey 8-5 in No. 2 doubles. UVa’s number-three doubles team of Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) defeated Blakeley Griffith and Zsofia Zubor 8-1 in the Cavaliers’ lone doubles win.
The Lady Vols increased their lead to 3-0 with straight set singles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Griffith, ranked No. 12, dispatched UVa’s Brintney Larson 6-2, 6-3 and Vogel downed Stevens 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
McVitty gave UVa its first point with her comeback win at No. 2 singles. After falling behind Schutte 4-6 in the first set, she rolled to 6-3 and 6-0 wins to claim the match. Yahner added another three-set win for the Cavalies at No. 4 with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win vs. Whoriskey.
Leading 3-2, Tennessee’s Samantha Orlin defeated No. 5 Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) to clinch the victory for the Lady Vols. At No. 6 singles, Hammond easily dispensed of Zubor, winning 6-3, 6-4, to close out the dual match.
The Cavaliers continue their season-opening road trip on Feb. 24 when they visit Harvard.
