Cavalier Baseball Downs George Washington 11-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) went 5-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Virginia to an 11-1 win over George Washington Sunday opener at Davenport Field. It was the second consecutive game in which Virginia scored 11 runs, as the team has posted double-digit run totals in four of the first five games of the year. Virginia improves to 4-1 on the season, while George Washington falls to 0-2.
“The conditions aren’t the best, but they are the same for both teams,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “I thought we did another good job of taking an early lead and giving out pitchers an opportunity to challenge their hitters. Jacob (Thompson) pitched six solid innings and I thought Neal Davis did an excellent job in the final three.”
In addition to Miclat, the Cavalier offense was paced by Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio), who went 3-for-3, Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.), who went 2-for-3, and David Adams (Margate, Fla.), who went 2-for-4, including his first home run of the season.
The Cavalier pitching staff used just two pitchers on the afternoon. Starter Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) went six innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out six to record his second win of the season (2-0). Neal Davis (Baltimore, Md.) pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs on three hits with four strike outs to record his first career save.
Colonial starter Brian Frazier took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Virginia took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Miclat led off the game with an infield single. He stole second and scored as Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga,) tripled to right field. Marsh scored on a RBI groundout by Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.). Later in the inning, Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) walked, stole second and scored on Farrell’s RBI single.
The Cavaliers added a run in the second inning. Cannon reached on an error that put him on second. He moved to third on a balk and scored on Miclat’s bunt single.
George Washington got on the board in the top of the fourth as Charlie Kruer hit a solo home run to right field to make the score 4-1.
The Cavaliers moved out to a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Cannon led off with a single and later scored on Miclat’s double.
Virginia added three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Adams led off the inning him his solo home run to left. Guyer walked and Farrell was hit by a pitch, before pulling off a double steal to put them in scoring position. Guyer scored on a RBI groundout by Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) and Farrell scored on Cannon’s RBI single.
Virginia added three final runs in the bottom of the eighth. Miclat led off with his third triple of the series. He scored when Doolittle reached on an error by the third baseman. John Scaglione (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) followed with a walk. Later in the inning, Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) doubled to right to score Doolittle. The next at bat by Ryan Hudson (Tampa, Fla.) produced an error that allowed Scaglione to score.
The Cavaliers will continue its homestand on Monday, with the final game of the series against the Colonials. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Davenport Field. Freshman Matt Packer (0-0, 3.86 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Cavaliers.
