GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia freshman Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Monday.

Wright led UVa in its two road games during the final week of regular-season competition. At Georgia Tech, the frosh was UVa’s leading scorer with 12 points. She also grabbed five boards and dished out four assists in 38 minutes of action. In Sunday’s win at Clemson, Wright tallied 24 points, on bucket shy of a career high, and grabbed eight rebounds. She also added a career-high two blocks.

After 29 games, Wright stands second in team scoring with 14.9 ppg. The Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year leads all conference freshmen in scoring. A starter in all 29 games, Wright leads the ‘Hoos in steal with 67 and stands second is assists with 65.

The ACC weekly honor is the eighth for Wright this season. The frosh has also earned the Conference honor on Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Dec. 11, Jan 2, Jan.15, Feb. 5, and Feb. 12. Wright is the most decorated rookie in Virginia school history. She surpassed National Freshman of the Year Brandi Teamer (2001-04) who earned six ACC weekly honors. The conference record for weekly honors by a rookie is nine, held by Wake Forest’s Tracy Connor (1992-93).

The No. 8 seeded Virginia Cavaliers (16-13) face No. 9 seed Clemson (12-17) in the first round of the 2007 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Thursday, March 1 at 3 p.m. at the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum.
