Virginia Softball Shutout By No. 13 Michigan

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Virginia softball team was held to only one hit in a six-inning 8-0 loss to No. 13 Michigan Sunday morning (March 4) in the Crispers/JU Invitational at Jacksonville University’s Ashley Sports Complex. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 0-4 in the tournament and 7-13 on the season. UVa wraps up play in the tournament with a pair of games against host Jacksonville Sunday afternoon.
The Wolverines (20-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Alessandra Giampaolo led off with a single to left field. After a sacrifice, Giampaolo moved to third on Samantha Findlay’s single to shortstop. A walk to Teddi Ewing loaded the bases and Maggie Viefhaus knocked in the first two runs of the game with a single up the middle. Allison Kidman accounted for the final three runs of the inning with a homer to right field. Michigan added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Giampaolo brought home the run in the fourth with a double to left center. Kidman drove in her fourth run of the game with a double down the left field line in the fifth and Samantha Findlay made the score 8-0 with a RBI single in the sixth.
Fourth-year catcher Michelle Salmiery (San Jose, Calif.) broke up Michigan’s bid for a perfect game with a single down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Nikki Nemitz threw five perfect innings with four strikeouts before giving way to Stacey Delaney in the sixth. Delaney got the first out of the sixth before allowing the single to Salmiery.
Second-year Karla Wilburn (Del Mar, Calif.) suffered the loss in the circle for UVa and fell to 5-7 on the season. In two-thirds of an inning, Wilburn gave up five runs on four hits with one walk. Fourth-year Coty Tolar (Marietta, Ga.) entered the game in the first frame and went a total of 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with one walk and a strikeout. Third-year Whitney Holstun (Escondido, Calif.) made her first pitching appearance since her freshman season in 2005 and threw two innings. Holstun gave up one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
