CHARLOTTESVILLE – Playing at home for the first time in a month, the No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team took advantage of the home court advantage with a 6-1 victory over No. 39 Virginia Tech Wednesday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 17-3 overall and 5-0 in the ACC, while the Hokies fall to 10-6, 1-4 in the conference.

“Overall, I thought we played at a very high level today,” said head coach Brian Boland. “Anytime Virginia and Virginia Tech play in any sport, you can expect both teams to play at their highest level. It was good to keep our momentum we gained last week going. We now have to prepare for a challenging weekend against Clemson and Georgia Tech.”

Virginia took an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the three doubles matches. Second ranked Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) got Virginia going with an 8-4 win over Pedro Graber and Nicolas Delgado at the No. 1 position. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) clinched the opening point for Virginia with an 8-3 win over Arvid Puranen and Brandon Corace at No. 3 doubles. Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) completed the sweep with their tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles against Alexei Sergeev and Albert Larregola.

In singles, the score quickly jumped to 3-0 in favor of the Cavaliers. Huey downed Larregola 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 position and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ignaci Roca at No. 5 singles. Inglot clinched the dual match with his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Delgado at No. 3 singles. Singer made the score 5-0 with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Corace at No. 6 singles. In the only matchup of nationally ranked players, No. 2 Devvarman topped No. 49 Puranen 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. In the final match on the courts, Virginia Tech scored its lone point of the afternoon as Yoann Re downed Barrick in a superbreaker at No. 4 singles.

Virginia will continue its three-match homestand on Friday, March 30, as the Cavaliers host Clemson at the Snyder Tennis Center. Match time is 3 p.m.
