CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Tech’s Stephanie Savre hit a pair of home runs and Angela Tincher fired a three-hitter to lead the Hokies to a 4-0 victory over the Virginia softball team Friday afternoon (April 6) at The Park. The Cavaliers had their three-game winning streak snapped with the loss as they fall to 14-25 overall and 1-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies, who are ranked 23rd in the ESPN.Com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, improve to 30-12 overall and 7-3 in the conference.

Virginia Tech scored all the runs it would need in the third inning when Savre hit a two-out, three-run homer to left center. Callie Rhodes singled up the middle and Caroline Stolle drew a walk before Savre hit the homer. Savre increased the Hokies’ lead to 4-0 with a solo home run down the right field line with one out in the fifth.

Virginia’s best chance to score came in the second inning when third-year left fielder Lindsey Preuss (La Plata, Md.) led off with a single to center field. She stole second base and advanced to third when the high throw to second sailed into center field and Virginia Tech’s center fielder dropped the ball. Tincher got the next two UVa batters to strike out to end the inning.

Tincher improved to 23-4 in the circle with the shutout victory. She allowed three hits while striking out 15 without issuing a walk. Tincher retired the final 10 batters she faced.

Fourth-year pitcher Coty Tolar (Marietta, Ga.) suffered the loss in the circle to fall to 5-8 on the season. In 3.2 innings, Tolar allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Third-year Whitney Holstun (Escondido, Calif.) relieved Tolar in the fourth and went 2.2 innings. Holstun gave up one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Second-year Karla Wilburn (Del Mar, Calif.) retired the final two batters in the seventh for the Cavaliers.

Preuss had two of UVa’s three hits in the contest. Fourth-year second baseman Elea Crockett (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded Virginia’s only other hit in the contest, a single up the middle in the first inning.

UVa wraps up its three-game series against the Hokies on Saturday (April 7) with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
