LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s rowers won 9 of 10 races against Central Florida and Michigan State on Saturday at Lake Monticello. The Cavaliers hosted Central Florida, Duke, and No. 20 Michigan State at their final home regatta.

In the day’s final event Central Florida upset No. 7 Virginia in the varsity eight race. The Cavaliers finished in a time of 6:33.16 behind Central Florida’s 6:31.86.

Virginia’s boat included Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Renee Albers, Katrin Sydlik, Bridget Fowler, Heather Gardner, Lauren Hutchins, Yvonne Epp, Jennifer Cromwell, and Melanie Kok. Michigan State (6:30.00) beat Duke (6:33.10) in the other varsity eight competition.

Virginia’s second varsity eight finished ahead of Central Florida with a time of 6:24.57. The Golden Knights finished with a time of 6:46.45.

Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Libby McCann, Anna Samaha, Andria Haneman, Emelia Colman-Shepherd, Kelsie Chaudoin, Madeleine Smerin, Sara Lippa, and Augusta Stratos manned the Cavaliers’ second varsity eight boat. Michigan State (6:41.40) outlasted Duke (6:56.56) in the other second varsity eight race.

Manned by Mary Eddy (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Rebecca Ryall, Amanda Chase, and Diane Leigh, Virginia “A” captured the afternoon race in the varsity four competition, finishing in 7:12.88, followed by Virginia “B” (7:16.98) and Central Florida (7:33.84). Another Virginia boat also came in first in their afternoon varsity four race to defeat Michigan State in a time of 7:36.83. The Spartans finished in 8:19.50. In a third varsity four race, Michigan State (7:42.40) defeated Duke (7:55.61).

In the afternoon novice races, Virginia “A” came in first (6:45.50), followed by Central Florida in second (7:04.60) and Virginia “B” in third (7:14.60), while Duke (7:48.93) fell to Michigan State (7:14.32) in the final novice race of the afternoon.

Virginia’s novice varsity eight boat was comprised of Caitlin Wilmot (coxswain), Alexandra Clair, Marie Long, Caitlin Clark, Nancy Graves, Pamela Baylor, Nora Phillips, Shalane Carlson, and Helen Tompkins.

The Virginia rowers swept all five races they competed in during the morning session. UVa’s seventh-ranked varsity eight (6:31.90) beat out No. 20 Michigan State (6:33.00), while Central Florida (6:37.9) won over Duke (6:41.9).

Virginia’s boats swept the varsity four competition, coming in at the top of each race in which they competed. Virginia “A”, manned by Taylor Gilmore (coxswain), Jessica Streufert, Allison Brennan, Mieke Pitts, and Schafer Bomstein, won in a time of 7:24.7. Virginia “B” was second (7:37.0), while Michigan State was third (8:00.4). In another race, Virginia won in a time of 7:19.7 to defeat Michigan State in a time of 7:41.0. In a third varsity four race, Central Florida (7:43.7) beat out Duke (7:48.57).

The Cavaliers also won in the morning novice eight race. Virginia “A” finished first ahead of Michigan State (7:14.5) and Virginia “B” (7:33.2). In the other race, Central Florida finished ahead of Duke with a time of 7:12.7. The Blue Devils finished with a time of 7:46.6.

Virginia will travel to Redwood Shores, California on April 14 to compete against Washington State, California, and Stanford before heading to the ACC Championships in Clemson, S.C. on April 21.
