The Virginia women’s track team is in third place, just two points out of first, after Day 1 of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. Cavalier first-year Meghan Briggs took home second place in her first ACC meet, while Kara Scanlin ran the fastest 10K for a Cavalier since Patty Matava set the school record in 1987 en route to a third place finish. Virginia finished the day with 20 points, two points behind Day 1 leader Virginia Tech and one point behind Duke.

In the 10K, both the men and the women took third and fourth; the men also finished eighth as Taylor Smith edged teammate James Erickson by .48. The All-American Scanlin ran with teammate Katie Read on an island in front of the main pack after the first two finishers went out at a fast pace early; Read and Scanlin were able to maintain their own quick pace for the 10K and Scanlin’s time of 33:53.32 is the fourth-fastest time in school history. She is only the sixth person to break 34 minutes in a Virginia uniform. Read’s time of 34:20.96 ranks her seventh all-time in school history and was good enough for fourth at the meet tonight.

On the men’s side, after the race open with a 15:30 through the opening 5K, Virginia’s Andrew Dumm led a charge with 1200 to go, and in the end he was passed before he finished in third in 29:52.61. Eight seconds behind him in fourth was teammate Ryan Foster (30:04.86). Smith’s time of 30:39.52 just edged Erickson’s 30:40.00. Foster and Erickson both qualify for the IC4A meet in the 10K with their times tonight.

Briggs continued the strong tradition of javelin throwers at Virginia with her runner-up finish in her first ACC meet. She tossed 145′ 4″ (44.31m) and was the top rookie in the competition. Briggs has already qualified for the NCAA Regional. Teammate Bianca Debartolo threw a personal-best 132′ 3″ (40.31m) to take eighth, giving the Cavaliers a valuable team point in the process.
