No. 5 Virginia Wins All Races On First Day of South/Central Regional Sprints

Oak Ridge, Tenn. – The No. 5 Virginia women’s rowers won all twelve races during competition at the 2007 Aramark South/Central Regional Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Cavaliers won six races in the preliminary heats during morning competition and went on to win their six semifinal races in afternoon competition.
Virginia’s “A” boat opened the morning events winning the first heat of the open four, finishing in a time of 7:50.70. Ohio State finished second (8:06.59), followed by Notre Dame in third (8:09.78), Kansas in fourth (8:19.36), Murray State in fifth (8:32.44), and North Carolina in sixth (8:49.46).
The Virginia “B” crew finished first in the second heat of the open four with a time of 7:45.20. The Cavaliers were followed by Louisville in second (7:53.40) and Wisconsin in third (7:56.69). Michigan came in fourth with a time of 7:59.95 and Iowa finished fifth in 8:09.53.
The Cavalier novice rowers finished their race in a time of 7:11.40 to win the first heat. They were followed by Clemson “A” in second (7:26.14), UCF in third (7:27.81), North Carolina “A” in fourth (7:32.61), and Tennessee “B” in fifth (8:08.87).
In the varsity four race, Virginia also finished first, coming in with a time of 7:37.20. Wisconsin finished behind the Cavaliers in 7:46.75, followed by UCF (7:56.80), Texas (7:59.98), and Miami (8:23.18).
Virginia completed the second varsity eight race in a time of 6:46.60 to finish first in their respective heat. Louisville finished second with a time of 6:54.66 followed by UCF in third (7:00.25), Miami in fourth (7:05.74), and Kansas State in fifth (7:11.41).
In the final race of the morning, No. 5 Virginia finished first in their varsity eight heat with a time of 6:37.90. UCF finished second (6:46.63), Duke came in third (6:52.22), and Miami ended in fourth (6:57.39). Kansas State and Murray State finished fifth (7:06.05) and sixth (7:13.15), respectively.
The afternoon races began with a Virginia win in the open four semifinals. In the first heat, Virginia “A” finished first with a time of 8:20.20. Louisville came in second (8:31.43), followed by Wisconsin in third (8:34.09), UCF in fourth (8:43.63), Texas in fifth (8:55.81), and Kansas in sixth (9:21.26).
In the second heat, Virginia “B” finished first with a time of 8:14.40, followed by Tennessee in second (8:22.37) and Michigan in third (8:25.54). Indiana finished fourth (8:36.60), Notre Dame came in fifth (8:40.29), and Ohio State ended in sixth (8:44.38).
In the novice eight race, the Cavaliers won competition with a time of 7:06.20. Wisconsin finished second (7:16.52), Michigan State came in third (7:24.74), and Kansas ended in fourth (7:28.77). UCF and Tennessee finished fifth (7:32.67) and sixth (7:43.57), respectively.
Virginia finished the varsity four semifinal race in first with a time of 7:40.80. The Cavaliers were followed by Notre Dame in second (7:49.41), Ohio State in third (7:51.29), Michigan in fourth (7:54.15), Kansas in fifth (8:02.26), and UCF in sixth (8:06.11). The Cavaliers varsity four boat was manned by Mary Eddy (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Rebecca Ryall, Amanda Chase, and Chrissie Monaghan.
The Cavaliers won the second varsity eight race with a time of 7:00.10. Michigan State finished in second (7:02.65), followed by Wisconsin in third (7:03.96), Ohio State in fourth (7:07.09), and Duke in fifth (7:22.48). UCF finished sixth with a time of 7:27.18. The second varsity eight boat was comprised of Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Bridget Fowler, Yvonne Epp, Renee Albers, Emelia Colman-Shepherd, Desiree Burns, Kelsie Chaudoin, Andria Haneman, and Anna Samaha.
In the last race of the afternoon, Virginia’s varsity eight crew finished first with a time of 6:47.50, followed by Ohio State in second (6:52.22) and Notre Dame in third (6:54.58). Wisconsin finished fourth (7:01.81) with Duke in fifth (7:03.41) and Clemson in sixth (7:08.85). Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Jennifer Cromwell, Kerry Maher, Libby McCann, Augusta Stratos, Lauren Hutchins, Katrin Sydlik, Sara Lippa, and Melanie Kok manned the varsity eight boat.
“I am very pleased with how we did today and winning all of the races is fantastic,” said head coach Kevin Sauer. “I’m looking forward to racing tomorrow and doing the best job we can.”
The Cavaliers will compete in five races tomorrow to conclude competition at the South/Central Regional Sprints. The first Cavalier race is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. with the Virginia “A” and “B” crews racing in the open four grand final.
