Cavalier Women's Soccer Tops West Virginia 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 9 Virginia women’s soccer team used three second half goals in a span of ten minutes to down No. 15 West Virginia 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers improve to 2-0-0 on the season with the victory, marking the fifth consecutive year they have won their first two games of the season.
“This was a quality win for our team,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We did a great job of battling throughout the match and imposed our game on them. West Virginia has a lot of talent, so a result like this is a tribute to our entire team and their play today. We had a lot of players contribute and we had a chance to showcase our depth. It is only two games into the season, and one weekend doesn’t make or break a year, but it gave us a lot of confidence heading into our trip to California next week.”
The Cavaliers (2-0-0) and Mountaineers (1-1-0) played to a scoreless first half, with neither side creating many chances. Virginia took control of the match in the 51st minute, as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) took a free kick from 30 yards out and found Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.) inside the box, you flicked the ball into the back of the net for her first career goal. Less than two minutes later, Foley gave Virginia a 2-0 lead, as she received a cross from Caitlin Miskel (Boca Raton, Fla.) at the far post and placed a shot past the keeper for her first goal of the year. In the 61st minute, Foley rounded out the scoring as she took a corner kick and curled a shot over the outstretched goalie and into the net.
Virginia outshot West Virginia 16-7 in the game, while each team had six corner kicks. Cavalier goalkeeper Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made three saves in goal to record her second consecutive shutout. Mallory Beck made four saves for the Mountaineers.
The Cavaliers will return to action next weekend as they travel west for the Santa Clara adidas Classic. Virginia will meet No. 13 Stanford on Friday and play No. 5 Santa Clara on Sunday.

NOTES: Virginia posted a shutout against the Mountaineers for the sixth time in the past seven meetings between the teams … the 3-0 Virginia win is the most lopsided result of the series … Shannon Foley had two goals and one assist for five points, setting a new career high … Foley’s assist was her 28th of her career, moving her into a second place tie with Sarah Huffman (2002-05) on the Virginia career list, and two behind Andrea Rubio’s (1989-92) school record of 30 … Foley’s assist was also her 11th game-winning assist, giving her the Cavalier record in that category by herself … Nikki Krzysik has four points (1G, 2A) on the season, which is double the amount of points she had in her first two seasons combined.
