Cavaliers Fall to Oklahoma

SAN DIEGO – Fourth year Sarah Kirkwood became Virginia’s all-time kills leader Friday, but the volleyball team fell to Oklahoma 3-0 in the opener of the USD Invitational.

Kirkwood, who needed eight kills to set the record, finished with a match-high 15 kills. The Tampa, Fla., native moved ahead of Deanna Zwarich at the top of the list with 1,536 career kills.

The Sooners defeated Virginia 30-18, 30-25 and 30-23. The loss drops UVa’s record to 4-3 this season while Oklahoma improves to 6-1.

The Cavaliers hit .109 for the match compared to OU’s .230 percentage. Oklahoma recorded 51 kills as a team while UVa had 35.

Setter Marlow Bruneau finished with 30 assists and led the team with 12 digs, alongside Kirkwood, who also had 12 digs. Teammate Melissa Caldwell added 10 digs.

Virginia will play two matches Saturday, beginning with a 1 p.m. (10 a.m. PT) contest with host San Diego. The Cavaliers will wrap up non-conference play at 8 p.m. (5 p.m. PT) versus UC Santa Barbara.
