SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 8 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling to No. 10 Stanford 2-1 in the first game of the Santa Clara/adidas Classic. The Cardinal took advantage of two early goals and held off a late Virginia rally to post the victory.

“I felt like the game was decided in those first ten minutes,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We made a couple of mistakes and give Stanford credit, they punished us for them. We regrouped at halftime and made a game of it. We had a chance to tie it but couldn’t.”

The Cardinal (3-0-0) jumped out to an early lead in the third minute on Kelley Birch’s first goal of the season off an assist by Kelly O’Hara. Stanford added to its lead in the 10th minute when Lizzy George converted a penalty kick to make the score 2-0.

Virginia (2-1-0) closed to within one in the 81st minute as a ball cleared out of the box went straight to Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.), who fired the rebound into the net for her first career goal. The Cavaliers continued to pressure over the final ten minutes, creating several chances, but not able to score the equalizer.

Virginia outshot Stanford 8-6 in the game, while each team had four corner kicks. Cavalier goalkeeper Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves in net.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday as play concludes at the tournament. Virginia will meet the host, No. 3 Santa Clara, at 1:30 p.m. PT.
