WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened the 2007 fall season this weekend as three individuals are competing at the UNC-W Landfall Tournament in Wilmington, N.C. Highlighting the tournament for the Cavaliers is junior Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.), who has advanced to the final.

Yahner will play Yvegeniya Stupak of East Tennessee State in Sunday’s final. To reach the final, Yahner won three matches, all in straight sets. She defeated Valerie Behr of UNC-Greensboro 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16, Paige Kenstrue of Elon 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, and Abbey Walker of Virginia Tech 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Cathy Nimitz (Glen Allen, Va.) reached the semifinals of the tournament, before falling to Stupak. In the opening round she topped Nazil Kutuk of Charleston Southern 6-2, ret. before downing Tamara Sachs of East Carolina 6-4, 5-7, 13-11 in the quarterfinals.

Lauren Downing (Virginia Beach, Va.) competed in the second flight of the tournament, and will play in the consolation final on Sunday. She opened the tournament with a loss to Hayley Wahl of Elon 6-2, 7-6, but rebounded for a 6-4, 7-6 win over Amanda Swindall of Charleston Southern in the consolation bracket.

The tournament concludes Sunday in Wilmington.
