Virginia Men's Soccer Tops Tulsa 2-0

DALLAS – The No. 3 ranked Virginia men’s soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the season Friday night for a 2-0 win over Tulsa Sunday afternoon to conclude their play at the SMU Mi Cocina Classic. With the victory, the Cavalier improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while Tulsa (3-1-0) was handed its first loss of the year.

“I thought we did a good job today in a lot of the areas where we had problems against SMU,” said head coach George Gelnovatch. “We responded well from Friday against a quality opponent. Tulsa is a NCAA Tournament caliber team, so we are pleased with the result.”

The Cavaliers took the 1-0 lead with a goal in the 18th minute of play. Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) scored his third goal of the season on an assist from Chris Tierney. The goal ended up being the game-winner, the 13th of Reyering’s career. It moved him into sole possession of eighth place on the Virginia career list.

In the second half, Virginia added a second goal in the 80th minute as Jeremy Barlow (Langley, Va.) scored his first of the season.

Virginia outshot the Golden Hurricane 13-3 in the contest and had a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made two saves for Virginia, while posting his second shutout of the season. Dominic Cervi had five saves for Tulsa.

Virginia will return home on September 16 as it hosts St. John’s at Klöckner Stadium. Game time is set for 5 p.m. and the match will be broadcast online, live and on-demand by ACC Select.
