SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 8 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team concluded play at the 2007 Santa Clara/adidas Classic with a 0-0 tie against No. 3 Santa Clara Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Cavaliers are now 2-1-1 on the season after playing ranked opponents in three of their first four games of the year.
“I thought we fought hard today,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “This game was going to be a real psychological battle. To come back after Friday and play a team like Santa Clara and get a result says a lot about our team. Quality teams have to be able to play away from home against good teams and today we proved we can do that.”
Virginia had the better of the chances in the first half, outshooting the Broncos (2-0-1) 4-2 before the break. The Cavaliers led in shots 9-6 after regulation before Santa Clara had three of the four shots in the overtime periods.
Virginia outshot Stanford 10-9 in the game, and had a 2-1 corner kick advantage. Cavalier goalkeeper Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made four saves in net to post her third shutout of the season. Meagan McCray had four saves at the other end for the Broncos.
Stanford won the tournament, with their win over the Cavaliers Friday and a 2-1 overtime victory against No. 2 Notre Dame in Sunday’s first game. Santa Clara finished second, having downed the Fighting Irish 7-1 on Friday. The Cavaliers were third and Notre Dame was fourth. Senior defender Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore forward Caitlin Miskel (Boca Raton, Fla.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Cavaliers will return home next weekend to host the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. On Friday, Virginia meets No. 20 Colorado at 7 p.m. The first game of the tournament between New Mexico and Arizona will start at 4:30 p.m.
