CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia athletics department is hosting a special Homecomings event at the John Paul Jones Arena on Oct. 12 featuring the funk and dance-pop band “Morris Day & The Time.” This special event coincides with the beginning of basketball practice and is on the eve of the Homecomings football game with Connecticut at Scott Stadium. The UVa football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams will be introduced at the event.

“Morris Day & The Time” are known for such favorites as “Jungle Love,” “The Bird,” “The Walk,” “Cool” and “777-9311.”

Virginia football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball season ticket holders, along with individuals who purchased tickets to the Virginia-Connecticut football game on Oct. 13, are eligible to receive up to six free tickets to the Homecomings event.

The free tickets for the event must be reserved on-line beginning at 5 p.m. on Sept. 24 or by telephone beginning at 9 a.m. on Sept. 25 on a first-come, first-served basis. Every eligible account holder will be sent an e-mail on Sept. 24. The e-mail will contain a direct link to the on-line claim process. Those individuals who do not have an e-mail account will be sent a postcard that will arrive no later than Sept. 24 instructing them to reserve their tickets on-line or by calling the athletics ticket office.

Full-time UVa students can also attend the concert at no charge. Students can register for tickets to the Homecomings event through the on-line SHOTS system (www.uvashots.com) beginning Sept. 24.

“The athletics department received great feedback after last year’s “Earth, Wind & Fire” concert that brought our fans together to open the John Paul Jones Arena,” Executive Associate Athletics Director Jon Oliver said. “We are pleased to continue this tradition and to say thank you to our fans by hosting this Homecomings event that also coincides with the start of preseason basketball practice. Our fans have provided wonderful support for our teams and this is a fun way to bring everyone together on the eve of the Homecomings football game.”

The doors to the John Paul Jones Arena will open at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 and the Cavalier Team Shop in the arena’s main lobby will feature a special 25 percent discount on all merchandise.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. with an appearance by the Virginia football team. The women’s and men’s basketball teams will be introduced before the “Morris Day & The Time” concert begins at approximately 8:20 p.m. The concert is scheduled to conclude around 9:35 p.m.

Virginia football tickets and UVa basketball season tickets are on sale. Tickets to athletics events may be purchased on-line at www.virginiasports.com or by calling the UVa athletics ticket office (1-800-542-8821 /434-924-8821. Fans can also order tickets in person at the athletics ticket office in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
