CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 8 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team opened a four-game homestand in strong fashion Friday night, topping No. 18 Colorado 4-0 on a rainy first night of the 2007 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) tied a career-high for points with her two-goal, one-assist performance to lead Virginia to its third win of the year.
“It is hard to say this was truly a 4-0 game,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “Colorado is a great team and we got some breaks and they didn’t tonight. I thought the first half was even, but we got the early goal that settled us down. Any time you can score four goals on 12 shots, you will take that type of production.”
The Cavaliers (3-1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, the earliest goal they have scored all season. Foley hit a cross from the left flank that floated over the goalkeeper’s head and just inside the far post.
The second half, the Cavaliers’ added to their lead as Foley scored her second of the game in the 51st minute. Four minutes later, Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) scored her first goal of the year, as she tapped in a loose ball after a scramble in the net. Foley set up the final goal of the night, threading a through ball to Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio), who found the back of the net for the second time this season.
Virginia outshot Colorado 12-5 in the game, while the Buffaloes (2-1-2) had a 5-1 corner kick advantage. Cavalier goalkeepers Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) and Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) combined for Virginia’s fourth shutout of the season.
The Cavaliers close out play at the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic on Sunday when they play No. 25 Arizona at 1 p.m. The Wildcats defeated New Mexico 4-1 in the first game of the tournament on Friday.
