CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 8 ranked Virginia women’s soccer team recorded its third consecutive shutout of a ranked opponent, downing No. 25 Arizona 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Klckner Stadium. The victory gave the Cavaliers the championship of the 2007 Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, their first title in their home tournament in three seasons.
“We have had some slow starts this season, so we really focused on starting strong,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “Today, it almost seemed like it was a little too easy to get that lead. To get three goals on your first five shots is great production. I was pleased with how we played in the second half with the lead. We didn’t just want to win the game, but win both halves, and we got the goal in the end to do so.”
The Cavaliers (4-1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play. Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) sent a cross into the box that Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.) headed home for her second goal of the season. The assist was Foley’s 30th career assist, tying the school record set by Andrea Rubio (89-92). Foley made the score 2-0 three minutes later with her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Caitlin Miskel (Boca Raton, Fla.) hit a cross that Farrelly flicked on into the run of Foley who placed the ball past the keeper. Virginia made the score 3-0 in the 27th minute as Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.) one-timed a Miskel cross into the net for her second goal of the season.
The second half, the Cavaliers’ added a final goal in the 89th minute as Amanda Stewart’s (West Chester, Pa.) pass sent Julia Falk (Clifton, Va.) in on a breakaway, which she scored on for her first goal of the year.
Virginia outshot Arizona 19-4 in the game, while each team had two corner kicks. Cavalier goalkeeper Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves to post her fourth shutout of the season. Danielle Nicolai made six saves for the Wildcats (4-2-0), who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Foley, who had three goals and two assists on the weekend was named MVP of the tournament. She was joined by Farrelly, Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.), and Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.) on the All-Tournament team.
The Cavaliers will continue their homestand on Friday, as they host Liberty. Game time at Klckner Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
