CHARLOTTESVILLE Virginia women’s soccer player Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was named the National Player of the Week by Soccer America magazine this week. The senior forward was instrumental in a pair of Cavalier wins last week as UVa captured the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic title.
Foley was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, in which the Cavaliers topped a pair of ranked foes, each by a 4-0 score. Against No. 18 Colorado on Friday night, Foley tied a career high with five points as she tallied two goals and one assist. On Sunday, she had a goal and an assist in Virginia’s win over No. 25 Arizona. Her assist in that contest was her 30th career assist, tying the school record set by Andrea Rubio (1989-92).
In addition to the award from Soccer America, Foley was named to the National Team of the Week by Soccer Buzz, as was teammate Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.). Sauerbrunn anchored a defense that posted a pair of shutouts on the week and scored her first goal in two seasons against Colorado.
Earlier in the week, Foley was named ACC Player of the Week and National Player of the Week by Top Drawer Soccer.
The Cavaliers, who moved up to No. 4 in this week’s Soccer America rankings, will return to action with a pair of home matches this weekend. Virginia hosts Liberty on Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 24 William & Mary on Sunday at 2 p.m.
