CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 4 ranked Virginia men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games, downing Mount St. Mary’s 3-0 Tuesday night at Klckner Stadium. Ross LaBauex (Chicago, Ill.), Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany), and Will Hall (Shirley, N.Y.) scored for the Cavaliers, who improved to 6-1-1 on the season.
“We were able to accomplish several things tonight,” said head coach George Gelnovatch. “The guys who normally play a lot of minutes were able to get some rest and the guys who don’t normally start had a chance to get some minutes and show what they can do. Those players are making progress and in the long run, that depth will only make us better.”
The Cavaliers had the better of play in the first half, but could not get on the scoreboard until the 37th minute. Neil Barlow (Herndon, Va.) sent a cross that found LaBauex in the middle of the box, and he sent a shot just inside the far post to give UVa a 1-0 lead. Virginia held that advantage into the break.
In the second half, Virginia continued to pressure, but didn’t add to its lead until the 86th minute as Jonathan Villanueva (Grand Prairie, Texas) sent a cross that a sliding Reyering, making a run to the near post, knocked past the keeper. It was the sixth goal of the year for Reyering, who entered the game leading the ACC in goals. The Cavaliers added a final goal in the 90th minute as the Mountaineers (2-3-1) were whistled for a handball in the area, and Hall converted the ensuing penalty kick for his first goal of the year.
The Cavaliers outshot the Mount 15-5 and had a 9-3 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made one save for Virginia to post his fourth shutout of the year. Chris Davis made six saves for Mount St. Mary’s.
Virginia will continue its homestand Friday night as it hosts No. 16 Virginia Tech in its ACC home opener. Game time at Klckner Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast online by ACC Select.
