Notre Dame, IN The Virginia men’s golf team is in fourth place after the first round of play at Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. The Cavaliers shot 13-over 289 on the par-70 Warren Golf Course and are eight strokes behind tournament leader Michigan State. The Spartans carded a 5-over 285 and hold a three shot advantage over Baylor. Notre Dame is third at 289.

Senior Greg Carlin had the hot hand for the Cavaliers, finished at 1-over 71 putting him in a seven-way tie for fifth place. Michigan State’s Graham Baillargeon and Notre Dame’s Doug Fortner lead the field at 2-under 68.

Freshman Amory Davis shot 73 and is 17th place for UVa while Kyle Stough is 21st with a 74, Conrad Von Borsig is 33rd at 75 and freshman Henry Smart, playing in his first collegiate event, is 42nd at 77.
