WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. The fourth ranked Virginia women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at No. 23 Wake Forest. It was the ninth shutout in 10 games this season for the Cavaliers, who extended their school record shutout streak to over 766 minutes.
“I thought Wake played well today,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “They pressed a lot and at times took us out of our game. There were ebbs and flows all day, which is only natural in this league. To come out of the opening week of the ACC with a win and a draw on the road is a positive. We must now continue to build on it.”
The teams played a scoreless first half with neither side generating a dangerous scoring opportunity. In the second half, both teams had quality chances, but failed to convert. In the 49th minute Kelly Quinn’s (Dublin, Ohio) long distance shot was headed for the upper corner, but was saved over the bar by Wake goalkeeper Laura Morse. On the ensuing corner kick, Alli Fries (Dublin, Ohio) had a free header that was saved by Morse. Wake’s best chance came in the 67th minute, when Sarah Winslow was on a breakaway, but slotted her shot just wide.
Virginia outshot Wake Forest 13-12 in the game and had a 5-4 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made five saves to post her seventh shutout of the season. Morse made five saves and Amanda Barasha made one in net for the Demon Deacons.
The Cavaliers will return to Charlottesville for its ACC home opener on Thursday when they host No. 12 Florida State. Game time at Klckner Stadium is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live online by ACC Select.
