CHARLOTTESVILLE The fourth ranked Virginia women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games with a 1-1 tie against No. 21 Clemson Sunday afternoon at Klckner Stadium. Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) scored for the Cavaliers, who are now 9-1-4 overall and 3-0-3 in the ACC.
“We are obviously disappointed in the result” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We started off slow and wasted the first 45 minutes. That was the difference. We were able to generate a lot of chances in the second half and the overtimes but could get the game winner. Give Clemson credit, they are a good defensive team.”
Neither team generated a quality scoring chance in the first half and the game remained scoreless at the break. The Tigers (8-2-3, 1-1-3 ACC) took the lead in the 49th minute as Nuria Zufia headed in Elizabeth Jobe’s long ball into the box. It was the first goal allowed by the Cavaliers after halftime this season. Virginia evened the match in the 62nd minute. After the Tigers committed a foul just outside the box, Foley scored on the free kick from 20 yards out. It was her team leading eighth goal of the season.
The Cavaliers outshot Clemson 25-5 in the contest and had a 7-2 corner kick advantage.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday, October 18 as they host Virginia Tech. Game time at Klckner Stadium is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live nationally by Fox Soccer Channel.
