Wilmington, NC The 25th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team wrapped up its fall season by finishing fourth at UNC Wilmington’s Landfall Tradition. The Cavaliers, the defending tournament champions, shot 305 during the final round to complete the 54-hole tourney at 897. Wake Forest, aided by three players finishing in the top seven, won the event for the first time with a score of 878. Purdue was second at 887 and Michigan State third at 891.

Virginia was led by freshman Calle Nielson’s fourth-place showing. Nielson shot 1-over 73 Sunday to complete the tournament at 3-over 219. Only two players managed to break par during the final round that was played in windy conditions. Nielson’s finish marked the second time she led UVa in scoring during the fall and it was her second top-10 finish. Her 219 equaled her previous best tournament score.

Junior Lene Krog just missed posting her fourth straight top-10 finish this year. Krog shot 78 Sunday and finished 11th overall at 222. Jennie Arseneault used a 76 Sunday to finish 17th at 225. Kristen Simpson was 23rd at 231 including a 79 Sunday. Whitney Neuhauser was 30th at 232. She shot 78 during the final round.

Wake Forest’s Nannette Hill took medalist honors at 217. Purdue’s Maria Hernandez and Michigan State’s Laura Kueny both shot 218 to tie for second, just one shot ahead of UVa’s Nielson.

The Cavaliers open the spring portion of their schedule Feb. 17 at the Papa John’s Intercollegiate in Miami.
