COLLEGE PARK, Md. Yannick Reyering scored his 13th goal of the season, but the 14th-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team fell, 4-1, on the road at Maryland Saturday night.
Trailing 1-0 in the first half, Virginia had a good chance to equalize with 17:38 on the clock as Ross LaBauex handled the ball in the box with his back to the goal. He turned and fired but his shot was deflected out of bounds for a corner kick, but it did not provide a threat.
The Cavaliers did get their equalizer in the 31st minute when Neil Barlow used a long pass to find Reyering on the left side of the box. Reyering fired a shot between Terp goalkeeper Will Swaim and the left post to tie the game up. For Barlow, it was his fourth assists of the year.
The Terps responded, however, and two minutes later reclaimed the lead on a goal by Graham Zusi.
Maryland had two more goals in the second half by Aki Kadotani and Stephen King to win by the final score of 4-1.
In goal for Virginia, Michael Giallombardo had three saves, while Swaim finished with two. The loss dropped Virginia’s record to 10-5-2, 1-4-2 in the ACC. Maryland improved to 9-4-4, 3-3-1 in the league.
Virginia will wrap up its regular-season conference slate at No. 2 Wake Forest on Nov. 9. Kick-off from W. Dennie Spry Soccer Stadium is set for 8 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel.
