CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia women’s soccer team received an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Tournament and will open play this weekend at Klckner Stadium. The Cavaliers, a No. 4 seed, will host first and second round play for the fifth time in the past seven years.

The Cavaliers will play Loyola (Md.) in a first round match Friday at 5 p.m. William & Mary and Georgetown will meet in the other first round match in Charlottesville at 7:30 p.m. Friday’s winners will play in the second round at 2 p.m. Sunday at Klckner Stadium.

“First of all, we realize what a great accomplishment it is to make the NCAA Tournament,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “That is something we never take for granted. We are excited to be home for the first weekend. There is no other team I would rather go into the tournament with.”

Virginia is 11-3-6 this season, including a 5-2-3 mark in the ACC. Last week, the Cavalier reached the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, before falling in penalty kicks to eventual champion North Carolina.

Loyola is making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last eight years. The Greyhounds (10-5-5) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title last weekend with a 2-0 win over Marist in the final. William & Mary (14-4-2) is making its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance. The Tribe is on a seven-game unbeaten streak, but fell in penalty kicks to VCU in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals last weekend. Georgetown (14-7-0) is coming off a 2-0 loss to Notre Dame in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament.

Virginia is making its 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 20th overall appearance. Last year, the Cavaliers upset West Virginia and Wake Forest before falling at Texas A&M in the round of 16.
