CHARLOTTESVILLE Virginia senior Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Tuesday. Devvarman was joined on the All-Tournament team by Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India).

Devvarman was named to the All-Tournament team at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles with Huey. Singh was named to the All-Tournament team at No. 4 singles.

This is the first time an ITA All-Tournament Team has been named. Voters for the team included the participating coaches, the ITA National Ranking and Tournament Committee and select media covering the championships.

Devvarman was also named ACC Player of the Week for leading Virginia to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle, the first men’s tennis team national championship in ACC History. In the Cavaliers’ 4-3 win over UCLA in the quarterfinals, Devvarman clinched the match with his three-set win over Harel Srugo. A day later, Devvarman clinched the 4-2 semifinal win over Ole Miss, defeating Erling Tveit in three sets. On Monday, he topped Justin Kronauge 6-1, 6-3 in the Cavaliers’ 4-1 win over Ohio State in the final.

Devvarman extended his singles winning streak to 13 matches and is 21-1 overall this season. He has also teamed with Huey for a 21-1 doubles record.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday as they host a doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia will play Old Dominion at 1 p.m. and host Boston College in its ACC opener at 6 p.m. Admission to both matches is free.
