DURHAM, N.C. Top-ranked Virginia improved to 23-0 overall and 9-0 in the ACC with a 5-2 victory over No. 41 Duke Sunday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. Virginia extended its school record winning streaks of 23 wins overall and 26 wins against ACC competition.

The Cavaliers won a thrilling doubles point, rallying to take the opening point. Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) scored an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Dylan Arnould and Alex Stone. Duke drew even as David Goulet and Christopher Price upset top-ranked Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) 9-7 at the No. 1 position. The doubles point came down to the match at No. 2 doubles. Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) rallied from down an early break to even the match at 7-7 against Kiril Dimitrov and Reid Carleton. The Duke team broke to serve for the match at 8-7, but the Cavaliers broke back to force the tiebreaker. In the breaker, the teams traded points and each side had three match points. At 10-all, Barrick hit a net-cord ace that barely dropped over the net and Virginia won the ensuing point to win the match.

In singles, the Cavaliers clinched the match with three straight set victories. Angelinos downed Jared Pinsky 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles for Virginia’s first singles win. Minutes later, Devvarman made the score 3-0 with his 6-4, 6-4 win over Goulet at No. 1 singles. The win was his 25th consecutive singles win, setting a new school record. The previous record was 24, set by Devvarman in 2007. Huey clinched the match with his 7-6, 6-4 win over Carleton at No. 2 singles. Virginia recorded its final point of the day as Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) rallied from dropping the first set to score a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Dimitrov at No. 3 singles.

Virginia played the match without Dominic Inglot (London, England), the nation’s No. 9 ranked singles player, who had the flu.

The Cavaliers return home for the final two matches of the regular season. On Friday they host NC State at 2 p.m. and conclude the regular season against Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m.
