Devvarman, Boland Named ACC Player, Coach of the Year

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. After leading Virginia to an undefeated season and its fifth consecutive ACC regular season title, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Player of the Year and Brian Boland was named ACC Coach of the Year conference officials announced Thursday.

Devvarman became just the second Cavalier to be named ACC Player of the Year, joining Brian Vahaly who earned the honor in 2000 and 2001. This season he has been ranked No. 1 nationally every week in both singles and doubles. Overall, Devvarman has a 35-1 singles record this season, including a 22-0 dual match record (11-0 in the ACC).

Boland was named ACC Coach of the Year for the second time after leading Virginia to a second consecutive undefeated league campaign, the Cavaliers’ fifth consecutive ACC regular season title. UVa finished the regular season with a 25-0 record and has been ranked No. 1 nationally every week of the season. In February, the Cavaliers became the first ACC team to win the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

Devvarman was one of three Cavaliers to be named All-ACC, as he was joined by Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India). Devvarman and Huey both were named All-ACC for the fourth time in their careers, joining Vahaly and Doug Stewart as the only Cavaliers to be four-time All-ACC performers.

Huey went 11-0 in singles play in the ACC this season and 28-5 overall. In addition, he has teamed with Devvarman to form the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the nation. Singh was one of five freshmen to be named to the All-ACC team. He has an overall singles record of 26-5, including a 9-2 mark in the ACC.

Top-seeded Virginia opens play at the ACC Tournament on Friday at 9 a.m. against the winner of Thursday’s first round match between NC State and Georgia Tech.
