COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Virginia softball team (14-32, 5-12 ACC) was defeated by Maryland (31-15, 5-9 ACC) 6-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Robert E. Taylor Stadium in College Park, Md.

The Terps had three two-run innings en route to the victory, scoring a pair in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Maryland outhit the Cavaliers 9-2 and committed no errors in the field to Virginia’s two.

UVa scored its only run of the second game in the top of the first inning. With one out, first-year Alison Pittman reached on a walk. Catcher Kelly Haller singled to left center to score Pittman all the way from first.

Fourth-year Whitney Holstun took the loss in the circle for the Orange and Blue. Holstun threw 4 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out one. First-year Allee Rife came on in relief to throw the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits.

After Virginia led 1-0 after the first half inning of play, the Terps responded in the bottom half with two runs, thanks to a homer to left from Brittany Bessho. In the fifth, Maryland tallied three singles and was able to score its second run on a double steal to take a 4-1 lead.

In the sixth, Maryland put two more on the board to extend its advantage to 6-1.

In the top of the seventh, Virginia able to load the bases and put the tying run in the on-deck circle. Unfortunately the third out was made before the Cavaliers could score. UVa left nine runners on base in the contest compared to six runners stranded for Maryland.

UM pitcher Lindsey Wright threw a complete game and allowed just three hits with three strikeouts and six walks.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday.
