Highlighting the Virginia men’s soccer 2008 schedule will be the season-opening Virginia Soccer Classic, at least 11 home contests at Klckner Stadium and match-ups with 10 opponents that advanced to last year’s postseason, the University announced Wednesday.

“The Virginia Soccer Classic, featuring SMU, St. John’s and Old Dominion, will be a great start to an exciting schedule,” head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We’re also looking forward to another tough home ACC schedule in the exciting atmosphere of Klckner Stadium.”

Fresh off its second round NCAA Tournament appearance, the Cavaliers host the Virginia Soccer Classic on Friday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 31. The first contest of the tournament features SMU vs. Old Dominion at 4 p.m., followed by UVa vs. St. John’s at 8 p.m. On the second day of the tournament, UVa will take on SMU following an Old Dominion-St. John’s match-up.

In non-conference action, the Cavaliers will play at George Mason (Sept. 5), Hofstra (Sept. 7), at VCU (Sept. 13), Central Connecticut State (Sept. 23), Liberty (Oct. 7), Longwood (Oct. 21) and American (Oct. 28).

The ACC schedule kicks off Sept. 19 when UVa hosts NC State at Klckner Stadium (7 p.m.), and continues at Virginia Tech (Sept. 26), at North Carolina (7 p.m.), vs. Clemson (Oct. 10), at Boston College (Oct. 17), at Duke (Oct. 25), vs. Maryland (Oct. 31) and vs. Wake Forest (Nov. 7).

In the preseason, the Cavaliers will play a pair of exhibition games. In a rematch of last year’s NCAA second round contest, UVa travels to West Virginia on Saturday, Aug. 16, for a 7 p.m. exhibition. On Saturday, Aug. 23, Virginia welcomes ODU to Klckner Stadium for an exhibition match.

The 2008 ACC Tournament will be held Nov. 12-16 in Cary, N.C.
