CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia third-year Carly Winger (Windermere, Fla.) was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team, announced Wednesday by the conference at the annual softball banquet.

North Carolina’s Danielle Spaulding was selected as the 2008 ACC Player of the Year, while Angela Tincher of Virginia Tech was named the Pitcher of the Year. Rookie Alyssa Allbritten of NC State earned Freshman of the Year while UNC mentor Donna Papa earned Coach of the Year laurels.

Winger, in her first year at Virginia after transferring from California, has started 49 games at shortstop. Her .305 batting average is second on the squad and she leads the Cavaliers with four triples and is tied for the team-high with six home runs and 25 RBI on the year.

The eighth-seeded Virginia softball team (15-37, 6-15 ACC) will play top-seeded North Carolina (49-9-1, 18-2 ACC) at 3 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the ACC Championship. All games will be shown live at www.ACCSelect.com and live stats also will be available at www.VirginiaSports.com.
