Charlottesville, VA Virginia freshman golfer Amory Davis tied for first place at the U.S. Open Local Qualifying tournament played at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa. on Monday. He now advances to a 36-hole sectional qualifying tournament on June 2 with a chance to advance to the U.S. Open which is scheduled for June 12-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Local qualifying tournaments continue through May 19.

Davis tied Chris Gray, the head professional at Ed Oliver Golf Club in Wilmington, Del. for first place by shooting 2-over 73. Only six golfers advanced to the sectional round from the local tournament field of 88 competitors.

The U.S. Open is the second-oldest USGA championship. The event is open to professionals and amateurs with a Handicap Index of 1.4 or lower. The Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
