Chattanooga, TN The Virginia men’s golf team is tied for 17th place after Thursday’s opening round of play at the NCAA East Regional Championships taking place at Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Cavaliers shot 2-over 286 on the par-71 course. The top 10 teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers are five shots out of 10th place.

Virginia was led by sophomore Kyle Stough who finished 21st at 2-under 69. He had six birdies and four bogeys during his round. Freshman Will Collins used a birdie on the 18th hole to finish the first round at 1-under 70 in 33rd place. Sophomore Steven Rojas used a pair of back-nine birdies to finish 60th at 1-over 72. Conrad Von Borsig was the Cavaliers’ final counter, finishing at 4-over 75 in 107th place. Senior Greg Carlin shot 7-over 78 and is in 133rd place.

The unranked Cavaliers finished the opening round ahead of such ranked teams as No. 7 South Carolina (288), No. 27 Mississippi (293) and No. 30 UAB (287) and are tied with No. 12 Duke and No. 21 East Tennessee State.

“I think we left some shots out there today and I didn’t feel great about how we played when we finished, but as the day unfolded, it turned out we are in a lot better position than I thought we would be,” said Cavalier coach Bowen Sargent. “Hopefully this was our bad round. I was very happy about how Kyle and Will played today, but in this tournament, you need four good scores and we have to finish stronger in the days ahead.”

Top-ranked Georgia built a large lead on the first day of play. The Bulldogs shot 19-under 265. They are eight strokes ahead of second-place Augusta State at 273. Georgia had three golfers finish among the top three in stroke play after the first day.

Augusta State’s Henrik Norlander and Georgia’s Hudson Swafford share the first-round lead after shooting 6-under 65.

Virginia tees off at 12:59 Friday to start its second round of the 54-hole event. Links to live scoring of the tournament are at VirginiaSports.com and Golfstat.com. The Cavaliers are making its first regional appearance since 2005.
