Albuquerque, NM The Virginia women’s golf team completed its second round of play at the NCAA Championships Thursday morning and stands in 17th place when the teams return to the University of New Mexico Championship course this afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. (MT) shotgun start. The second round was suspended Tuesday due to high winds that consistently exceeded 40 miles per hour. The 12 teams still on the course when play was stopped resumed their rounds today at 7 a.m. (MT). The field had to stop for 20 minutes due to a lighting delay at 10:10 a.m.

The windy conditions had a dramatic impact on the Cavaliers’ scores. After shooting 8-over 296 during Monday’s first round, Virginia shot 29-over 317 during the second round. It was UVa’s highest 18-hole score of the season. The team’s 36-hole total stands at 37-over 613. A total of 12 teams finished the second round with scores of 20-over par or higher. USC and UCLA, playing in the morning during the second round, share the overall lead at 8-over 584.

Freshman Calle Nielson had UVa’s best second-round score, shooting 5-over 77. Joy Kim and Jennie Arseneault both shot 79, Lene Krog carded an 82 and Whitney Neuhauser finished at 85. Arseneault is 30th overall at 6-over 150, Krog dropped back to 56th at 8-over 152 and Nielson is 80th at 11-over 155. Kim sits in 98th place at 14-over 158 and Neuhauser is 114th at 18-over 162.

“It was something else,” said Virginia coach Kim Lewellen. “Those types of conditions are not something you can prepare for. You just battle and do your best. You cannot worry about it. A lot of people with some high expectations took a beating out there today. It is not every day you play on a golf course and the pin flags are bending halfway over and a tree gets uprooted because of the winds. At least we have 36 holes left to play, and I’m sure our girls will put up a fight to get back into this.”

The 72-hole tournament runs through Friday. Live scoring links are at VirginiaSports.com and Golfstat.com.
