SHANGHAI, China — Former Cavalier women’s soccer player Angela Hucles scored the opening goal in the United States’ 2-1 victory over Canada in the quarterfinals of the Olympic soccer tournament. The Americans, looking for their second consecutive gold medal, will meet Japan in the semifinals on Monday.

Against Canada, Hucles gave the United States a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of play. Amy Rodriguez’s cross was headed on goal by Heather O’Reilly. The Canadian goalkeeper made the save, but Hucles was there to tap in the rebound. The Canadians tied the game later in the first half and the match remained tied through the end of regulation. Natasha Kai scored the game winner for the United States in the 101st minute.

The goal was Hucles’ second of the games, as she also scored in the 4-0 win over New Zealand in group play. She has started all four games for the Americans in the Olympics.
