TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. The No. 6 Virginia women’s soccer team opened its 2008 season with a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in an exhibition contest. The game concluded the Cavaliers’ week-long training camp in Traverse City, Mich.

The teams played Saturday’s exhibition in three 30-minute periods. Virginia took the early lead in the third minute as Caitlin Miskel (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored. The Fighting Irish drew even in the 23rd minute on Courtney Rosen’s unassisted goal that curled into the upper corner from 30-yards out.

At the start of the second period, the Cavaliers retook the lead as a pair of first-years produced the eventual game-winner in the 31st minute. Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) set up Maggie Kistner’s (St. Louis, Mo.) goal to make the score 2-1.

Overall Notre Dame outshot Virginia 14-10 and had a 4-3 corner kick advantage. Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) and Sam Hale (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) made two and one save respectively for the Cavaliers, while Nikki Weiss had one for the Irish.

The Cavaliers will return home and play their final exhibition game of the preseason on Monday night as they host Georgetown at Klckner Stadium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
