CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 6 Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its preseason exhibition schedule with a 2-2 tie against Georgetown Monday night at Klckner Stadium. Each team scored one goal on either side of halftime in the 90-minute match.

“I was pleased with the fact that we were able to get everyone some quality minutes and gave a lot of players a chance to show what they can do,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We still have three days of practice to prepare for our opener and continue to improve.”

The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as Maggie Kistner (St. Louis, Mo.) scored her second goal of the preseason off of a cross by Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.). Samantha Baker drew the Hoyas even in the 33rd minute as she scored on a breakaway set up by a through ball by Camille Trujillo.

Georgetown went ahead 2-1 in the 70th minute as Baker’s long throw found Nicole Smith inside the penalty area, where she tapped the ball in. The Hoyas’ lead was short lived as the Cavaliers answered less than a minute later. Amanda Stewart’s (West Chester, Pa.) cross was played by Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.) right to Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio), who one-timed a shot from 20 yards out inside the far post.

Overall the Cavaliers outshot the Hoyas 22-3 and had a 7-1 corner kick advantage. Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) played the whole game in goal for Virginia, while Jackie DesJardin (seven saves) and Elizabeth Hanna (one save) split time in goal for Georgetown.

The Cavaliers open the regular season on Friday, August 22 as they host Loyola (Md.). The game is a rematch of a first round NCAA Tournament game last year won by the Cavaliers 4-0. Game time at Klckner Stadium is 7 p.m.
