Charlottesville, VA The Virginia men’s golf team opens the fall portion of its schedule this weekend at the Maryland Intercollegiate Sept. 6-7 at the par-71, 6,801-yard River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge, Md. The 18-team field includes six teams that earned invitations to the NCAA Tournament a year ago and four members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Virginia lineup will include junior Kyle Stough (Laurel, Md.), sophomores Will Collins (Salisbury, N.C.) and Amory Davis (Chadds Ford, Pa.) and freshmen Ben Kohles (Cary, N.C.) and Bruce Woodall (Eden, N.C.).

Collins led Virginia in stroke average last year at 73.31 while Stough was third at 73.81. Both players, along with Davis, were in the Cavaliers’ lineup for the NCAA Championships.

“This is the most depth we have had since I’ve been at Virginia,” said fifth-year coach Bowen Sargent. “The qualifying for this tournament was very competitive. We have a very young line up, but I’m anxious to see what Ben and Bruce can do in their first collegiate tournament. They are coming off very strong showings in some very good amateur events this summer, so I think they are excited about the opportunity to compete at this level. Will, Kyle and Amory all played very well for us last spring and I expect to see similar results this year.”

The tournament field includes Arkansas, California (Pa.), the College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, Georgetown, Kent State, Maryland, Navy, NC State, Old Dominion, Rhode Island, St. John’s, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Texas State, VCU and William & Mary.

The schedule calls for 36 holes of play Saturday and the final round on Sunday.
